What is classical Christian education?

Classical Christian education is a model of schooling that pairs the historic liberal arts approach to learning with a Christian view of every subject. Instead of treating each subject as a separate skill set, it aims at wisdom and virtue as well as knowledge, with theology integrated across history, literature, science and mathematics rather than confined to a Bible period. The Association of Classical Christian Schools, the movement's main association, presents the model through the trivium, Latin and a curriculum built on original sources and full texts rather than extracts in a textbook.
The trivium gives the model its structure, and the Association maps it to stages of a child's development. In the grammar stage, roughly kindergarten through grade 6, the emphasis is on content and facts, learned through memorisation, recitation and mastery of the basics of each subject. In the logic stage, roughly grades 7 through 9, the emphasis moves to reason and understanding: formal logic, how arguments work, and how the facts fit together. In the rhetoric stage, roughly grades 10 through 12, the emphasis is on discourse and wisdom, with students writing and speaking persuasively across subjects and, in many schools, researching and defending a senior thesis in writing and in person.
In practice, a classical Christian school is usually recognisable by a few shared marks: Latin taught over several years, history studied in chronological sequence, students reading whole Great Books and other primary sources, and discussion based lessons that expect students to reason aloud. Memoria Press, a major classical publisher, puts the core in similar terms: Latin and the classical civilizations of Greece and Rome, a thorough grounding in history and ancient cultures, and broad reading from the canon of Great Books. Not every school that calls itself classical does all of this to the same depth, and not every classical school belongs to the Association, so ask a school how many years of Latin it teaches, which books students read in full in high school, and whether there is a thesis or final presentation.
